A Brief History and background to the Club

Senior Women
have played at the top level in the Women's National Basketball League since gaining promotion in 1987.  We have worked very hard to promote the game in Suffolk and our success draws players and spectators from the neighbouring counties of Essex and Norfolk.

The squad relies very much on Junior development with many players making the grade as geographically Ipswich is somewhat isolated and not within a large populated area.

In order to improve the standard the club has had many overseas players from countries such as USA, Netherlands, Australia, Denmark and France to bolster the 'home grown' talent.

Unfortunately last season (2004 - 2005) was the first time that we did not have a senior team mainly down to the fact that numbers were down due to players retirements and others moving away.  Hopefully this situation will change in the future as more new blood is brought into the team.

A great advert for the club is that many of it's players have moved on but still remain playing for other teams in the League which cannot be said of most other clubs.

Junior Development
Our programme is the envy of the country and as you can see from the hall of fame page we have produced many junior internationals as well as winning numerous National League, Cup and playoff titles.

In order to produce this talent there are sessions set up for players from the age of 10 years old and upwards.  The club also enjoys excellent links with Suffolk schools as well as the Suffolk basketball association.

We currently have eight Junior teams competing at all Junior National League levels.

Tomcats were born!

In 2003 the club in conjunction with the Active Sports programme entered a Boys U/14 National League team under the guidance of Head Coach Nick Drane.  This was the first time the club had entered a Boys team and following on from that success we now have an U/18,U16,U/15 and U/13 boys teams as well.  Hopefully as numbers increase further teams will evolve.

International Success
is no stranger to the club as many current and past players have represented their countries at various levels from U/15's to Senior level.  These are mentioned in the
Hall of Fame

The Future
Basketball is a rapidly growing sport and we as a club are continually growing as well.  There are initiatives in place primarily through the 'Active Sports' programme to try it out and see and if interested then why not give Ipswich Basketball Club a try.  You never know you may well be a rising star.
